It’s been a LONG winter here in Boston, which is where Management Mentors is headquartered. As a result, we’ve been doing lots of reading about mentoring, leadership, and more. Here are some of our top picks:
1. Why It’s Important to Take Time to Mentor. This article from Forbes reminds us that mentors get just as much out of the mentoring experience as mentorees do, especially when those mentorees happen to be young entrepreneurs.
- Insightful quote: “Young entrepreneurs are often working with cutting edge technology or engaging with the latest trends. As a mentor, you can get first-hand insight into fresh and exciting innovations.
2. Since #MeToo, the Number of Men Who Are Uncomfortable Mentoring Women Has Tripled. This is an important read.
- Insightful quote: “A new set of findings from women’s empowerment non-profit LeanIn.Org and online survey platform SurveyMonkey reveal that, since the media reports of sexual harassment first emerged last fall, male managers are three times as likely to say they are uncomfortable mentoring women and twice as uncomfortable working alone with a woman.”
3. Men Mentoring Women: 8 Healthy Boundaries in the Age of #MeToo. A good companion piece to the above article, this piece by Julie Silard Kantor, President & CEO of Twomentor, has some excellent suggestions for setting healthy boundaries.
- Insightful quote: “I decided that it was time to write this piece on healthy mentoring boundaries and say to men that we absolutely need you as mentors and champions.”
4. What’s Your Favorite Movie on Mentoring? Many people (including us) always cite The Karate Kid, but this article brings up lots of others—and has a great idea about holding a “mentoring movie party” to get people familiar with the concept in action.
- Insightful quote: “There are so many choices of intergenerational mentoring movies. To name a few, and spark some memories: The Karate Kid, Star Wars, Akeelah and the Bee, Creed, Up, Harry Potter, My Fair Lady, Million Dollar Baby, Dead Poet’s Society, Lord of the Rings, Good Will Huntingand Almost Famous.”
5. Princess Kate mentoring Meghan Markle as she prepares for wedding to Prince Harry. Hey, even future princesses need mentoring! We wanted to leave you with some lighter fare (as well as an excellent example of informal mentoring).
- Insightful quote: “Markle has been relying on the support of Harry’s relatives, just as Kate had their support in guiding her in the principles of royal life and the work she would do as a new member of the royal family before her marriage to William in 2011.”
