If you have a formal mentoring program in your organization, you’ll want to have a “go to” person who manages the program itself as well as the mentors and mentorees.
That’s a high-level description of the mentoring program manager’s function. Below, we outline the MPM’s other responsibilities.
- Manages the recruiting, selection, and matching process
- Works with each mentoring pair to provide resources and resolve any issues
- Communicates regularly with mentors, mentorees, and mentoree managers
- Provides training both initially and during the program
- Obtains reports from mentors, mentorees, and mentoree managers on program goals and results
- Conducts an evaluation to determine the program’s effectiveness
- Communicates program results to participants and upper management
- Conducts separate meetings with mentors, mentorees, and mentoree managers to determine program progress and need for further assistance
- Reviews program guidelines and makes appropriate changes to enhance program effectiveness
- Markets the mentoring program to appropriate staff to generate interest in participation and gain support
- Conducts mentoree manager orientation to explain program goals and the roles of mentors, mentorees, and mentoree managers in the program
- Performs other duties that may arise from the mentoring program that are necessary for program success
Being a mentoring program manager is a rewarding experience. The most successful MPMs typically undergo training themselves. At Management Mentors, we make this training easy—and budget-friendly. You can take our online course any time and from the comfort of your home or office. Learn more here.
